Mo Johnston arrived in the United States in 1996 for the inaugural season of the Kansas City Wiz.
Johnston spent six seasons in Kansas City and was part of the magical season in 2000 as the club claimed the Supporter’s Shield and won it’s first ever MLS Cup.
The Scottish forward had previously spent time in the English First Division and the newly christened Premier League. He’s better known for playing for Celtic and then crossing over and signing with Rangers in the Old Firm rivalry in the Scottish Premier League.
Mo Johnston made 149 appearances and scored 31 goals for the Wizards in his time in KC. On top of the 2000 MLS Cup and Supporter’s Shield, Johnston was named an MLS All-Star in 1996, 1997, and 1998.
He was inducted as a Sporting Legend by the club in 2021.
This shirt was done up and issued to Mo Johnston during the playoffs of the 2001 MLS season.
Kansas City did not progress past the Miami Fusion, however, and it was never worn. Though he was known to occasionally wear long sleeves, Johnston wore short sleeves in Miami thanks to the heat and humidity.
This white secondary shirt features the 9/11 Memorial patch which is found near the bottom of the sleeve instead of in the usual spot near the biceps.
These white secondary jerseys with rainbow sides were the last jerseys the club wore on the pitch with the rainbow motif.
The colorful design choice was fully retired the following season, with royal blue and white taking over as the permanent new look of the club. that went unchanged until the rebrand.
