Tony Meola was traded to the Kansas City Wizards from the Metrostars before the 1999 season.
Meola appeared in just 9 games in the 1999 MLS season due to a season ending injury.
The goalkeeper bounced back and became a club legend the following season by racking up MLS MVP, Goalkeeper of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year honors while leading Kansas City to the 2000 MLS Cup title.
Meola is recognized as one of the greatest goalkeepers the league has ever seen, as well as arguably the greatest to play for Kansas City.
This yellow goalkeeper kit was sourced directly from Tony Meola’s own collection.
While searching for photos of Meola in the shirt, the only one to be found is on his 2000 MLS Upper Deck base card which shows him wearing this style of jersey in the 1999 season.
Along with the interesting color choice, it’s a heavier knit material that is more similar to a hockey jersey than a modern-day soccer shirt.
The kit has the Wizards logo centered on the front just below the collar, as well as the felt numbers that were used on Kansas City’s other 1999 jerseys.
Meola’s kit shows some wear and has a few marks.
The kit has marks on the right sleeve, another on the left shoulder, and one on the back near the number and there is also a pull or two due to the material of the shirt.
