Matt Besler is one of the most beloved figures to ever take the pitch in Kansas City.
#5 was born there, raised there, drafted there, and ultimately became the captain of the club during it's most successful period in club history. He should have retired here, as well, but it didn't work out that way as he spent one final season with Austin FC.
Besler was a five-time MLS All-Star, two-time MLS best XI choice, and the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year. He represented his country as a starter at the 2014 World Cup and earned 47 caps with the United States.
Then there's the club success.
Besler, along with fellow standouts Graham Zusi and Roger Espinoza, helped Sporting Kansas City rise to the top of Major League Soccer in the 2010's. He became an MLS Cup champion in 2013. He led the club to three US Open Cup championships (2012, 2015, 2017).
His impact is immeasurable.
Bes wore this rare long-sleeved third shirt during the 2016 season. It appears to have been worn on May 1st, 2016 against the LA Galaxy in a 1-1 draw. Brad Davis scored the lone goal for SKC.
The shirt shows some wear with dirt/mud staining or marking on the collar and the left sleeve. It was acquired from the collection of a former MLS kitman.
These white argyle third kits were the last time the club had a third kit. That's a puzzling outcome given the popularity of both the black and white argyle thirds. Hopefully we will see the return of the argyle kit in the future.
