Matt Besler was the heartbeat of Sporting Kansas City for 13 seasons.
The homegrown captain led the way for the hometown club to the tune of four titles and one Supporter’s Shield in that decade plus of excellence.
Besler had a rough go of things in 2016 with a concussion and an MCL injury causing the defender to play in less than 20 league games for the first time since 2010. He did make 20 appearances in total across all competitions, though.
The Kansas City native did manage to earn another MLS All-Star birth, however.
Matt Besler was issued this white argyle third jersey for the match on April 13th, 2016 against the Colorado Rapids.
The match was set to honor the 20th anniversary of the club’s inaugural game on April 13th, 1996 against the Rapids that ended in a 3-0 victory.
SKC wore special “20th Anniversary” kits with number sets that reflected the club’s original rainbow colored motif when they were known as the Kansas City Wizards.
Besler was on the bench thanks to a concussion suffered on USMNT duty in March. He had just been cleared to return to the pitch two days before the match against the Rapids.
Along with the special kits, the shirt does have a few small bobbles/pulls from its travels over the past several years.
These white argyle third kits were the last time the club had a third kit. That's a puzzling outcome given the popularity of both the black and white argyle thirds.
Hopefully we will see the return of the argyle style in the future.
