Tony Meola is one of the best goalkeepers to lace them up in Major League Soccer and was the first in a tremendous line of star players in net in Kansas City.
The New Jersey native spent 6 seasons in goal for the Wizards. He led the club to its first MLS Cup title in 2000.
Coming off of his MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP performance in 2000, Meola made just 17 appearances (plus 3 more in the playoffs) in the league in 2001.
Meola earned 4 clean sheets while serving as captain of the club.
Meola’s jersey is a beauty, though the color choices are a bit puzzling.
The vibrant green really pops and the fact that’s it’s a shiny material instead of flat cotton like most other shirts is a nice touch.
This jersey features the rare 2000 MLS Cup Champions patch on the right sleeve and USA Soccer Foundation sponsorship patches on the left sleeve and back.
There are a few spots of pilling on the front and back, as well as some staining near the bottom on the back of the shirt.
These kits seem to have been worn sparingly; perhaps only one time each for Meola and Oshoniyi.
One interesting aspect of the jerseys is that the gold champions star for winning the MLS Cup the season prior appears to be off-center
