Hérculez Gómez had a long career that spanned both Major League Soccer and Liga MX.
The Kansas City Wizards portion of his career was brief (just 34 appearances across two seasons), but he did score one memorable goal late in the 2008 campaign to help the Wiz qualify for the postseason.
Gómez’s career was a bit of a rollercoaster. Beginning with Cruz Azul of Liga MX and progressing through stops with LA Galaxy, Colorado Rapids, the Wiz, and then back to Liga MX with Puebla and other clubs.
He ended his career returning to MLS and capped it off with his second MLS Cup in 2016 with the Seattle Sounders.
Herc’s shirt has some moderate signs of wear and a little staining from unknown sources.
It is signed on both the front and back by the former United States international, and has an MLS Authentics sticker on the back as well.
The jersey perhaps most notable for it’s long sleeves, as there are very few match worn shirts in my collection that have them.
It is unclear which match in 2008 this shirt was worn in, but Gómez was definitely wearing a similar one on October 25th, 2008 against the Revs.
Hérculez Gómez wasn’t an impactful player in Kansas City, scoring just the one goal and adding 5 assists, but his career was pretty decorated.
Two MLS Cups (2005 and 2016) and 24 caps for the USMNT isn’t too shabby.
Herc is now a commentator for ESPN, following in the footsteps of another recognizable name who had a brief stay in Kansas City.
